GWP-PS VISIT LEADING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AT MASDAR CITY IN ABU DHABI

GWP Project Services Director and current BREEAM Assessor of the Year Barry Rankin recently paid a visit to Masdar City, one of the worlds leading low carbon developments in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates. The research tour included an experience on the PRT – an unmanned electric podcar transit system which links the University to other areas of the prototype city, run on a lithium phosphate battery solely charged using energy from Solar PV generated on site.

The built environment at Masdar is also at the cutting edge of sustainable construction, with the Masdar Institute (University) campus supplied by a 1MW roof top PV array, water savings of over 50% against average buildings in the region, but most impressively the natural ventilation strategy which provides cooled air at street level via careful orientation of building facades and a central wind tower similar to those used for centuries by traditional native settlements.

The eco-city masterplan is expected to be completed by 2030 and will be home to 40,000 residents, 60,000 commuters & education, business and leisure buildings designed to meet carbon neutral energy use.
