GWP are pleased to secure SKA certification to ‘Silver’ rating standard of the recently completed University of Plymouth Dental Education Facility, located in Exeter. The scheme is GWP Project Services first SKA certified Higher Education facility and the building is the first dental facility in the UK to be SKA certified.
The project required the change of use and major refurbishment of an existing academic and office building into a specialist dental facility used to train dental students in frontline NHS procedures – providing teaching facilities, seminar rooms and supporting amenities. Given the constraints associated with a relatively small budget and shorter construction programme than a new build facility, the increasingly popular SKA rating system – operated by RICS – was chosen as the most suitable method of assessment. SKA allows features not relevant to the project undergoing assessment to be filtered out of the criteria, therefore avoiding penalty for not meeting predefined conditions for low priority credits such as landscaping and ecology.
GWP Project Services have had increased interest in the SKA rating system for smaller scale refurbishment projects with construction periods of under 6 months as the assessment process is streamlined to that of BREEAM but considered equally robust in ensuring high levels of sustainable design and environmental consideration is present within the design and completed works.
