University of Hertfordshire Science Building

The New Science building at the University of Hertfordshire’s College Lane Campus is due to complete in summer 2015. It will provide state of the art laboratory facilities for the Schools of Pharmacy and Life Sciences in a building that will materially enhance the student and staff experience, creating a new sense of identity for the University’s science teaching.

The 5,000sqm building will provide over 3,000sqm (60%) of laboratory space, as well as research areas, simulation & demonstration areas, computer labs, undergraduate teaching space and offices. There will also be support and social facilities, whilst externally a large service yard will have a dedicated access route, keeping large vehicles away from a pedestrianised link, new cycle facilities and a 52 bay car park.

The building will sit within a brownfield site on the northern edge of the College Lane campus. BREEAM Assessment was particularly challenging due to the high coverage of laboratory floor space within the building and a complex building services strategy that looks to provide heating, ventilation and flued exhausts to a large number of laboratories. Layout was also challenging due to the high demand for climate controlled internal conditions, and a split in faculty departments across all four floors. BREEAM compliance is particularly strong in the Energy section after detailed review of the existing campus District Heating network, which is currently being upgraded.

The building services design includes a CHP system sized to meet the demand of the domestic hot water load, whilst future connection to a Biomass District Heat network provides flexibility should the operational related carbon emissions of the building wish to be reduced in later years.The building will exceed Part L carbon emission savings by over 25% and an extensive landscaping strategy will further enhance the buildings ‘green’ credentials as the site matures against the existing campus backdrop.

GWP Project Services worked with Project ManagersTurner & Townsend, Sheppard Robson Architects and CPW MEP consultants to ensure BREEAM compliance was inherent to the design, and the construction team of Bouyges UK, BDP, Capita and AECOM will be responsible for the targeted BREEAM 2011 ‘Excellent’ rating.
